The feedback from the scoresheets for WEEK 4 was as follows:
SCORES:
Winners:
8: Kippax British Legion, Kippax Legionnaires
7: Olde Taverners, The Vic
Non-winners:
8: Carleton Grangers
7: Featherstone Phoenix, Olde Tavern Allsorts
6: The Other Team
5: Golden Lion Dudes
4: Flanagan’s Army
COMMENTS:
Many of the comments were about the Panama hats error. It is one of those famous trick questions that Panama hats do not originally come from Panama, and the setter had clearly wanted to test us on where they do come from (which is Ecuador) but put Panama as the answer! There were comments too about the balance – see the Statistics section below for an analysis of this.
Olde Taverners: Aside from the obvious error the questions were evenly matched, but the last two rounds were much harder.
The Other Team (playing ‘B’): A few rounds, unevenly matched questions. One question’s answer was incorrect – Panama hats.
Kippax British Legion: Another controversy this week! Panama hats!
Golden Lion Dudes: Should not be getting questions with the answer as Panama. Needs to cross reference!
The Vic: Another tight game.
Flanagan’s Army (playing ‘B’): Once again balance favoured ‘A’ questions.
Olde Tavern Allsorts: Panama!
Featherstone Phoenix: Not the best!
Carleton Grangers: Very good game. Great spirit. High standard quizzing.
STATISTICS:
The numbers of questions remaining unanswered (by either team) in rounds 1/2/4/7/9/10 were as follows (in the 6 matches, expressed as A-B):
1-3
4-7
6-7
8-6
7-11
9-14
35-48 (Total)
So there does indeed appear to have been something of a favouring of ‘A’. Strangely, the 8-6 match (the only one where ‘A’ was harder according to the above) was Olde Taverners/Other Team, but their comments seem at odds with the statistic in their match.
Split by rounds instead of matches, the same unanswered questions break down as:
6-5 (Popular music albums)
10-7 (Plays)
6-11 (The Olympics & Olympic sports)
5-6 (British history)
3-9 (Landmarks)
5-10 (Cars)
Here it seems that the balance favoured ‘B’ over the first two rounds before it switched to ‘A’.
Only one answer was not got by anyone in the FTQL on the night:
Chance the Rapper (2016 album ‘Coloring Book’)
Apart from the above question, the heavyweight clash between Thatched House and Carleton Grangers only failed to answer three questions. Not only were these answered in places elsewhere, but Olde Taverners/Other Team answered all three between them in their match. These questions were the B5 ones in rounds 7, 9 and 10, as follows:
Carmarthen (Roman fort of Moridunum)
Duke of Rutland (home at Belvoir Castle)
Tortoise/turtle (badge of Gordon-Keeble)
One final statistic: it was the best week so far for individual question answering, with 77% of them being answered correctly and 46 of the 48 players getting at least one of their two correct.
