The feedback from the scoresheets for WEEK 20 was as follows:
SCORES:
Winners:
9: Olde Taverners
8: Lofthouse Lions
7: Carleton Grangers
6: Golden Lion Dudes, Kippax British Legion, Olde Tavern Allsorts
Non-winners:
7: Flanagan’s Army, The Other Team, The Vic
6: Kippax Legionnaires
5: Featherstone Phoenix
COMMENTS:
Carleton Grangers: Good quiz. A bit harder this week.
The Vic: Well beaten but balance poor for ‘B’.
Kippax British Legion: That’s a hard one.
Featherstone Phoenix: Hard! Favoured ‘A’.
Lofthouse Lions: Another good spread.
Kippax Legionnaires: Imbalance in part 1.
[Kippax started ‘B’ and swapped at half-time, so they probably mean that part 1 favoured ‘A’.]
Olde Tavern Allsorts: Knew Sloane but not his first name – which was bizarrely in bold (but e.g. Goldie of Goldie Hawn wasn’t in bold!).
[In what was surely a mistake by the setter, the collector who inspired the British Museum had his first name, Hans, in bold (despite the fact one is more likely to say ‘the collector Sloane’ than ‘the actress Hawn’). We said ‘John Sloane’ and even tried arguing that John is the English equivalent of Hans but got short shrift.]
Olde Taverners: Good interesting rounds, better balance than previous weeks.
Golden Lion Dudes: First half unbalanced towards ‘A’.
[I think this means it favoured ‘A’, and the Dudes, who played ‘A’ in that half, are being magnanimous in pointing this out.]
STATISTICS:
The numbers of questions remaining unanswered (by either team) in rounds 1/2/4/7/9/10 were as follows (in the 6 matches, expressed as A-B):
3-0
3-2
3-3
0-6
8-7
8-14
25-32 (Total)
So this bears out the comments about ‘A’ being favoured, though it’s not a huge difference, and in fact more matches showed an imbalance in favour of ‘B’ than ‘A’.
Split by rounds instead of matches, the same unanswered questions break down as:
6-7 (Africa)
5-9 (The 18th century)
2-4 (Comedy films)
5-2 (A, B, C)
3-6 (Musical instruments)
4-4 (Famous Canadians)
This confirms the comments about the first half showing the imbalance; the second half has a perfect balance.
There were no answers not got by anyone in the FTQL. Answers not got in the Lofthouse/Legionnaires match, but got elsewhere by the teams listed, were:
Ethiopia (From Greek for ‘burnt face’): Dudes
Hans Sloane (British Museum – see above): Flanagan’s
Carry on Cruising (First ‘Carry On’ in colour): Carleton, Dudes, Kippax BL, Olde Taverners
This week also saw a rare 15-0 whitewash, achieved by Carleton over The Vic on Musical Instruments.
