Neil's Weekly Question Round-Up – Handicap Cup Rd 1

ree

The feedback from the scoresheets for the HANDICAP CUP RD 1 (without the Kippax British Legion/Flanagan’s Army scoresheet, which appears to have been lost) was as follows:

SCORES:

Winners:

8: Carleton Grangers, Featherstone Phoenix, Golden Lion Dudes, Kippax Legionnaires

7.5: Olde Tavern Allsorts

Non-winners:

8: Lofthouse Lions, Olde Taverners

7: The Vic

COMMENTS:

Kippax Legionnaires: Great match.

The Vic (playing BB): Really tight game against an excellent team. Excellent handicapping gave us a good chance; balance took it away.

Golden Lion Dudes: Good game, excellent opponents.

Olde Taverners: Varied rounds, balance better in second half.

[See balance analysis below regarding comments above.]

Carleton Grangers (v King’s Arms): Very good spirit. Excellent opponents.

Featherstone Phoenix: Good quiz.

STATISTICS:

The numbers of questions remaining unanswered (by either team) in rounds 1/2/4/7/9/10 were as follows (in the 5 matches, expressed as A-B):

7-8

3-7

5-5

4-3

2-2

21-25 (Total)

It was the Legionnaires/Vic match that was 3-7, giving support to The Vic’s observation about the balance.

Split by rounds instead of matches, the same unanswered questions break down as:

6-6 (Political history)

2-8 (Team sports)

3-3 (Greek myth)

2-1 (US TV series)

7-7 (Cities)

1-0 (Words)

This confirms the Taverners’ suggestion that the balance was better in the second half, as the two halves of the quiz work out at 11-17 and 10-8 (the Team sports round being the sole cause of the imbalance in the first half).

There were three answers not got by anyone in the FTQL:

D F Malan (South African Prime Minister who began Apartheid)

Medan (Most populous city on Sumatra)

Taipei (Forms metropolitan area with the port Keelung)

Perhaps the controversy over Taiwan’s nationhood caused teams to overlook Taipei as a potential answer to that last one.
